Surface: Vinyl Mat 30"x24"
Mat preparation:
Basecoat entire mat with Licorice, use as many coats as needed to get total coverage.
Flyspeck/Spatter with Yellow Light and Violet Pansy. This design is freehanded except for the lettering which is below.
Note: I often sketch out my design on the mat before painting, that way I can make sure my scale looks right.
Painting Instructions:
Make a wash of Titanium White and base in the ghost border. After dry come back and outline
ghosts with double loaded Titanium White and Floating Medium and make the edges of the
ghosts more apparent. When dry come back with Licorice and Titanium White (for eye highlight)
and do the faces of the ghosts.
Pumpkins: Basecoat with Titanium White (this is so that the following coats
cover better. When dry double load the brush with Pure Orange and Burnt Umber with the
Burnt Umber side to the right make the lines for the sections of the pumpkin. I use a
3/4" brush for this, with the brush dirty tap the Pure Orange corner of the brush into
Tangerine and highlight to the right of the burnt umber lines. This gives a little bit of
depth to the pumpkin sections. With the dirty brush and a bit of floating medium blend the
rest of the pumpkin sections till the desired color is reached. Note: If you don't like the
streaky look of the pumpkin you can make it more coloring book like and do solid color
pumpkins. With a clean brush #12 with Burnt Umber and a sideload of Titanium White add
the stems of the pumpkin. When dry, add the curly Q's with Basil Green. I flyspecked over
just the pumpkins with Burnt Umber.
Kitty: with a #6 brush side loaded with Violet Pansy do the outline of the kitty head,
face and paw. With Yellow Light do the eyes, when dry come back with Licorice and dot the
pupil and Titanium White for the eye highlight. The tounge is Spring Rose and the Whiskers and
ear fur are done with a small round brush and Violet Pansy.
Lettering: See below for lettering style. Letters are done with Tangerine, Titanium White and Metallic Copper. I also flyspecked over the lettering and corners with Metallic Copper to add a bit of diminsion and sparkle!
Sealing: with a foam brush apply several coats (I usually do 4) of brush on sealer (I used a satin)
